Salary: £30,712 per annum (£15.75/hour)
37.5 hours per week (part-time hours will be considered)

Butterwick Hospice Children’s unit has recently undergone a full review of services, which has led to us requiring highly skilled, motivated and enthusiastic registered nurses to join our already existing team.

Following the development of our children’s services, we are in need of a number of full and part time registered nurses to join the team providing excellent care within our children’s hospice, which is a 6-bedded in-patient unit providing planned respite, emergency and end-of-life care.

You will be part of a highly capable, motivated and talented team of nurses and Health care Technicians to deliver a broad range of nursing and medical services.

We are looking for caring and conscientious registered Children’s or Learning Disabilities Nurse’s with an interest in palliative care, alongside experience in working with children and/or young adults with complex health needs.

Butterwick Hospice Care is the largest independent Hospice serving the areas of the Tees Valley, County Durham, North Yorkshire, and Wearside.  We are a registered Charity which exists to freely provide in patient and day services to adults and children suffering from life limiting illnesses.  We also provide supportive services to patients’ families and loved ones.  We rely on the donations and fundraising of people and businesses across the communities we serve to fund our services.

Butterwick Hospice Care was founded 36 years ago by the incredibly inspirational Mary Butterwick OBE. Providing a holistic service to adults, children and babies, the organisation supports patients with palliative and progressive diagnoses as well as their families and loved ones.

Butterwick House provides specialist residential short breaks and palliative care for babies, children and young people who have progressive life limiting or life-threatening health conditions that are likely to result in shortened life expectancy, or are currently experiencing a life- threatening episode up to the age of 25.

As an ideal candidate you will need to be able to demonstrate a desire to develop and maintain your professional standards and excellent nursing care, whilst understanding and appreciating children’s, young adults, carers’ and family needs.

Good communication skills, a high level of self-discipline and self-motivation are a must.  Flexibility is required to allow for a full range of shift cover, it is essential that you are able to deal with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.

You will have energy and enthusiasm, commitment and the ability to successfully deal with the daily challenges of palliative care.  In addition you will need;

  • Be a Registered Children’s or Learning Disabilities Nurse with experience working with children and/or young adults with complex healthcare needs.
  • Be able to demonstrate appropriate and continued personal/professional development
  • Be able to take lead in patient care, linking in with specialist nurses and doctors in the wider MDT.
  • To contribute to the creation and sustaining of a friendly, welcoming and caring environment in an informal nature, minimising instructional practices.

A palliative care qualification and/or ENB 998/C&G 730 Teaching Certificate are desirable but not essential for the role.

Job Purpose

To play a major role in ensuring the provisions of high standards of holistic care to children and young adults within the Hospice and to provide operational management support to the senior team. The post holder will ensure the aims and objectives of the organisation and that Care Quality standards are fully met.

Key Responsibilites

  • To contribute to the creation and sustaining of a friendly, welcoming and caring environment in a informal nature, minimising instructional practices.
  • To liaise with other professional colleagues to child/young person and relatives; to contribute, where possible, to the development and delivery to high quality specialist paediatric palliative care.
  • To assist with processing referrals and allocation of timely and appropriate care.
  • To promote holistic care by having an understanding of physical, psychological and spiritual needs of the child/ young adult.
  • To take responsibility, as appropriate, as shift leader for the children and families care team, staff and volunteers, in order to maintain the smooth running of the unit – giving and receiving accurate reports back both written and verbal.
  • When the Clinical Lead is not available, to contribute to the management of the daily operation of the unit, helping to ensure adequate care team cover to meet the needs of the children and families.
  • To act as keyworker to designated families.
  • To contribute to the provision of bereavement care.
  • To contribute to quality and best practice initiatives within the Children’s Unit.
  • To maintain awareness of child protection issues and procedures and ensure that they are adhered to in the day to day running of the unit.
  • To promote good communication pathways internally across Butterwick Hospice and with external stakeholders.
  • Ensure appropriate and adequate levels of clinical staffing within the Children’s Hospice which meets minimum operating requirements and Care Quality Commissions standards.
  • To safeguard and promote welfare of each child/young adult accessing the Children’s Hospice.

Quality & Evidence Based Practice

  • Keep up-to-date with national and local developments in relation to paediatric palliative, supportive and end-of-life care.
  • Monitor practice and effectiveness of nursing actions with regard to patient and staff safety.
  • Ensure risk assessment are completed, updated and agreed action plans have been implemented.
  • Ensure compliance with Care Quality Commission Standards and contribute to providing evidence for the completion of compliance documentation.
  • To participate in regular clinical audit ensuring any actions identified are introduced within the unit.

Education, Training & Staff Development

  • Participate in the induction, training and development needs of newly appointed staff.
  • Support and participate in the training of Student Nurses on clinical placement, ensuring mentors are allocated to students; standards are met and complete the education audit and documentation required by the University.
  • Actively participate in induction programmes for nursing and administration staff, taking responsibility for the completion of all relevant documentation including, probationary, preceptorship and leaver reports as required, ensuring all staff are competent and confident in their duties and understand relevant systems.
  • Driving teaching sessions in area of expertise.
  • Ensure regular competency assessments are preformed by all staff.

 

Generic responsibilities for Front line

Support new and inexperienced members of staff to be familiar with local environment, policies and procedures.

Be familiar with any rota or departmental work patterns and be available for work as required, be flexible to undertake shift changes where the service demands

Complete any records and information systems as required.

Apply good housekeeping principles such as turning off lights and equipment when not in use in order to contribute to reducing unnecessary expenditure

All staff have a statutory duty to safeguard children during the course of their duties and promote the welfare of children and young people.  Employees must be aware of what to do if they have any concerns.

All staff will undergo an annual performance assessment and agree a personal development plan which will ensure that the objectives of the employee, department and organisation are achieved.

All staff are personally accountable for improving and maintaining own knowledge and competence.

All staff will be aware of and support the working practices of any volunteers assisting with daily workload
