Butterwick Hospice Care was founded 37 years ago by the incredibly inspirational Mary Butterwick OBE. Providing a holistic service to adults, children and babies, the organisation supports patients with palliative and progressive diagnoses as well as their families and loved ones.

The Communications and Marketing Manager will be responsible for working with key internal and external stakeholders to develop and implement communications plans to support the achievement of the overall strategic objectives of Butterwick Hospice Care.

We are looking for someone who is confident and capable in converting detailed information into engaging content that delivers high impact, drive awareness of Butterwick Hospice Care, the charity’s work, brand and impact to increase our reach.

The successful candidate will be a talented, enthusiastic individual, adept at providing key messaging to develop and support our varied campaigns and day to day communication activities. You will bring Butterwick Hospice Care to life through emotive stories and case studies that will engage existing and new supporters into taking an action making sure all our communications and engagement is accessible to everyone.

Job Purpose

The Communications and Marketing Manager will be responsible for working with key internal and external stakeholders to develop and implement communications plans to support the achievement of the overall strategic objectives of Butterwick Hospice Care. This role will drive awareness of Butterwick Hospice Care, the charity’s work, brand and impact to increase our reach. You will be confident in converting detailed information into engaging content that delivers high impact, involved in the full marketing communication process from initial content planning through to delivery.

The Communications and Marketing Manager will develop and deliver the Marketing and Communications strategic direction and plans ensuring messages reach our key audiences. Confident in developing, implementing and evaluating plans to drive audience engagement and participation.

Communications and Marketing

  • Develop and implement internal communications timetable and strategy, ensuring all staff and volunteers are fully engaged and kept up to date.
  • You will develop and coordinator a team of internal communication champions, ensuring information is shared across teams.
  • Working with HR you will coordinate an annual staff and volunteer survey.
  • Support key staff members in any media opportunities they may encounter, briefing them as required and preparing them ahead of the interaction.
  • In liaison with Business Development, Retail, Lottery and Human Resources, develop retention and acquisition campaigns and produce content in support of targets.
  • Report on and analyse all aspects of communications especially in relation to ongoing campaigns.
  • Lead on the marketing activity for key Butterwick Hospice Care services, ensuring that key audiences are aware of and seek to engage with those services.
  • Work closely with the Business Development team to develop marketing for key fundraising activities, ensuring engagement and response rates are maximised for those activities.
  • Use evidence and research to build multi-channel campaigns which engage identified target audiences in the campaigns.
  • Oversee production and design of all marketing materials, produce copy, in liaison with relevant departments.

Brand

  • Develop and implement a brand strategy, ensuring that all marketing and communications materials across the organisation meet brand guidelines.
  • Act as a ‘brand guardian’ ensuring consistency across all internal and external communications

Digital Activity

  • Lead on the development and management of the website and blog, including producing and generating all content, making improvements to functionality and user experience, maximising its potential and monitoring its performance.
  • Review online content, making sure it meets users’ needs, is up to date, and is search engine optimised.
  • Develop and implement a robust digital testing plan and roadmap.
  • Create relationships with external websites like bloggers, other charities and third parties to increase site traffic.
  • Work with the Digital Communications Apprentice to optimise and increase the use of Google Ads.
  • Perform an editorial role across our digital presences, including proof-reading and editing, ensuring all content is accurate, up to date and consistent with our brand and messaging.
  • Support colleagues to maintain their sections on the website and help them to develop their digital skills.
  • Develop future digital products and processes, bringing in external expertise where necessary to support new developments
  • Monitor the performance of the website and content, using tools like Google Analytics and identify areas of improvement and trends that support the development of the website or future digital products
  • Design, produce and distribute e-marketing to select audiences and stakeholders
  • Line-manage the Digital Communications Apprentice and help expand social media presence, sourcing and sharing newsworthy information from across the charity. Produce regular reports detailing social media activity to share with staff.
  • Ensure the strategic and tactical use of social media to build awareness of Butterwick Hospice Care among key audiences and manage our key messaging.
  • Support day to day management and implementation of Butterwick Hospice Care communications via social media.

PR

  • Work with internal teams to identify engaging content.
  • Work with external agency to develop press releases, articles and statements
  • Increase the organisation’s profile across media, and with influencers and organisations.

Planning & Reporting

  • Monitor expenditure against the budget and provide appropriate information to the Head of Business Development & Marketing to ensure that they are meeting agreed objectives.
  • Create communications update and KPI dashboard for end of month reports.
  • Help to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of all communications and PR initiatives to ensure that they are meeting agreed objectives.
  • Prepare and present regular reports and statistics to inform Head of Business Development & Marketing on effectiveness of campaigns and activities.
  • Monitor and report on all press coverage and work Head of Business Development & Marketing contributing towards the media relations programme.

Responsibilities of All Staff

  • To be aware of and adhere to all Hospice policies and procedures relevant to the role.
  • To carry out duties and responsibilities in compliance with Hospice policies and procedures, current legislation and codes of conduct as applicable and with an awareness of personal limitations.
  • Be aware of the working practices of any volunteers assisting with the daily workload, communicating any concerns or opportunities for improvement in working practices to the individual, line manager or Voluntary Services Manager so that the health, safety and welfare of the volunteer and others affected by their acts or omissions is so far as is reasonably practicable, protected at all times.
  • To undertake the requirements of the role with an awareness of responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act and associated regulations.
  • To maintain good public relations and promote the Hospice philosophy of care in the wider community.
  • To provide support in the form of training/mentoring to other team members and student placements, as appropriate.
  • To identify Training and Development opportunities, in conjunction with line managers and the education co-ordinator.
  • To ensure that mandatory training updates are completed within timescales.
  • To participate in personal training as may be necessary to competently perform the duties and maintain the responsibilities of the post.
  • To undertake such other duties and responsibilities commensurate with the importance and nature of the post.
