The 2017 Great North Run will take place on Sunday 10 September
Take on a challenge for Butterwick Hospice Care and run the greatest half marathon in the world and benefit from an amazing package of extra support.
Starting in Newcastle upon Tyne the 13.1 mile route takes runners through the city centre towards the River Tyne where thousands of people will cross over the iconic Tyne Bridge, where if you're lucky, you might get a glimpse of the Red Arrows passing overhead. From there runners will travel through Gateshead while being entertained by numerous bands and entertainers and cheered on by the massive crowds. The route leads runners to South Shields where at the top of Prince Edward Road the view of the sea is one of the most welcoming sights along the whole course because you know you are nearly there!
From that point there is just over a mile to go and the crowds get louder as runners make their way down the final straight towards the finish gantry.
At the end of the run Butterwick runners make their way to the Butterwick Hospice marquee in the charity village where they can enjoy a soothing massage courtesy of the Spa at Ramside Hall. There will also be re-energising refreshments served to pick you up post race. Runners families are welcome to wait at the Butterwick marquee for their returning heroes!
The Butterwick Fundraising Team will also be at the marquee to welcome our runners home with lots of thank you's for your much appreciated support.
Remember while you are facing your training and fundraising challenges to prepare for your exciting run Butterwick Hospice helps more than 2,000 people every year who are trying to cope with the effects of a progressive life limiting illness. By running and raising funds for Butterwick Hospice you are helping our doctors, nurses, therapists and family support workers to support our patients and their loved ones and helping them face their challenges too.
Our lovely pin up photograph is of Butterwick Hospice Ambassador, Martin Griffiths, who ran for the Hospice, and his gorgeous son, Samuel, who ran in the Mini Great North Run! Martin runs in memory of his beautiful wife Judy, who so sadly lost her battle with cancer when Samuel was only 5 months old.
Because of the support of local people who raise funds for Butterwick Hospice Care our team of skilled doctors, nurses and family support workers were able to support Martin and his family. Read his story here. Now he works alongside Butterwick Hospice as an Ambassador to help ensure that Butterwick Hospice is able to help other young families like his.
