History
Butterwick Hospice Care is proud to work in and with our local community to continue the pioneering work of Mary Butterwick OBE, providing compassionate, dignified care and support where it is needed the most. In 1944 aged 19, Mary married John Butterwick and life continued happily until 1979, when he died suddenly aged 54 from cancer. When John was diagnosed Mary was told by hospital staff to go home and try and forget her husband, as there was nothing she could do for him now. Instead Mary sat down and planned a house where dying people and their families could go to be cared for, with a kind word and home-cooked meal. (read more)
