Lisa's Story

I have always been a supporter of the Butterwick, given to the Hospice Lottery and even helped organise a few fundraising events., I know of the service provided to the local area but I never expected to need the service first hand.

My best friend Laura from Nursery school got diagnosed with cervical cancer in June, it was a losing battle that she fought all of the way but at the end of April she was told it was terminal and that she had only months to live.

One of the services that I wasn't aware of is that Butterwick nurses visit terminally ill patients homes out of hours if needed and Laura did, often. It was then that I decided I would like to do something as a thank you to the Butterwick for Laura's help and signed up to do the Great North Run; something I have NEVER wanted to do.

I am not a runner and have not ran for more than 5 minutes - even in school, and that was a long time ago, but that was my challenge! Laura's challenge was that she had to be at the finish line to support me in September!

Unfortunately, Laura's illness took over her and only 3 weeks after being told it was terminal she was a resident at the Butterwick. They were fantastic with all of her family and friends, her Mam and Dad stayed over with Laura every night and the Butterwick could not have been more help, any amount of friends and family were allowed any time of day, as long as it wasn't too much for Laura. They took all of the hassle away from everything so the people that loved Laura could concentrate purely on her and nothing else. Nothing was too much trouble for them.

Laura unfortunately lost her battle on 13th May. I was very proud to be running in Laura's memory for such a worthwhile cause. I hope that you never have to use the Butterwick's services for anyone you know, but if you do at least you know your loved ones will be in very safe, caring hands.

Lisa.
