Butterwick Hospice at Stockton In-patients Unit

Patients usually come into IPU for 7 to 10 days for pain and symptom control and then return home. The unit also provides end of life care and respite care.

The In-patient unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals and volunteers who aim to make each patient's stay comfortable and pleasant. With a high ratio of staff to patients we can ensure that every patient is given individual care and attenAn In Patient Sistertion.

Generous staffing levels also ensure that patients families and loved ones are given the support they need. That can be time to speak to the doctor or nurses or just time to talk about the challenges they are facing with our skilled family support team.

Delivery of care across the Hospice is managed by the Director of Clinical Services supported in the in-patient unit by a large team of people. The team consists of:

  • Director of Clinical Services
  • Hospice Physician
  • In-Patient Unit Sister
  • Junior Sister
  • GP Locum Doctors with experience in palliative care.
  • Specialist nurses
  • Nurses in training
  • Health Care assistants
  • Auxiliary Nurses
  • Physiotherapist
  • Counsellors/Family Support Workers
  • Complementary Therapists
  • Team of trained volunteers
  • Night Security/Porter
  • Support services including kitchen, laundry and housekeeping staff

The atmosphere in the unit is very welcoming and peaceful. A home from home environment is maintained as far as possible and patients wishes to have personal possessions around them is encouraged wherever possible.

Patients' families and friends are made very welcome and are able to access many services provided by the Hospice such as Family Support, Carer's Group, Complementary Therapies, Counselling and Bereavement Support.

Butterwick practices an holistic approach to care and aims to help each patient and their family to experience illness in a less distressing way and to relate positively to every challenge they may encounter.
