Stockton In-patients

Patients usually come into the unit for 7 to 10 days for pain and symptom control and then return home. The unit also provides end of life care and in some cases respite care.

The In-patient unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals and volunteers who aim to make each patient's stay comfortable and pleasant. Delivery of care across the Hospice is managed by the Director of Clinical Services supported in the in-patient unit by a large team of people. The team consists of:

• Hospice physician
• Lead Sister
• Specialist nurses
• Health Care assistants
• Auxiliary Nurses
• Physiotherapist
• Counsellors/Family Support Workers
• Complementary Therapists
• Chaplain
• Team of trained volunteers
• Support services including kitchen, laundry and housekeeping staff

The atmosphere in the unit is very welcoming and peaceful. A home from home environment is maintained as far as possible and patients wishes to have personal possessions around them is encouraged wherever possible.

Patient's families and friends are made very welcome and are able to access many of the services provided by the Hospice such as Family Support, Complementary Therapies and Bereavement Support.

Butterwick practices an holistic approach to care and aims to help each patient and their family to experience illness in a less distressing way and to relate positively to every challenge they may encounter.
