Gnomes Invite Mayor to Escape to the Country!

Mayor of Stockton, Paul Baker, is visiting Butterwick’s smallest shop at Mill Lane in Billingham on 2nd February at 12.45 to find out how the little shop is becoming a talking point in the local community.

On 2nd February the shop staff, who are all volunteers, are holding a themed day called Escape to the Country. The five volunteers are dressing as a Sunflower, a Bumble Bee and three Gnomes and offering all things country to their local clientele.

Leader of the themed days, June Baker, from Port Clarence said: “I love doing things that bring the community closer together. I remember this little shop from when I was a young mum with very little to spend. There was always a welcoming smile waiting for me when I called in to find something I needed.”

“Years later my boys are grown and although I work full time I still find time to give something back. Our special themed days are such good fun. We always get a smile or a giggle from the customers and the rest of the team really get into the spirit and enjoy themselves.”

“There is a theme in the window every week but we enjoy it most when we can carry the theme through the whole shop.”

From 2nd Feb the shop will be selling all things country and have garden items, Wellies, country cook books and lots of warm clothing.

Mill Lane was the very first shop opened by Mary Butterwick, OBE, in support of the Hospice in Stockton. Today it is still a vibrant little shop committed to supporting the local community and to engaging with everyone there while raising funds for the Hospice.
